Isn't it strange that one can think about so much in such a short time? People in life-threatening situations can recall years of their lives in just a few seconds. Likewise, one can remember a romance from beginning to end, all while taking off his or her gloves.
That is exactly what Trysdale was doing as he stood in his room. On the table next to him was a unique green plant in a red earthen jar. It was a rare species of cactus, with long green leaves that moved in the slightest breeze. The way they moved seemed to say “come closer.”
Also in the room was Trysdale's best friend. He was the brother of the bride. The two stood in the room, wearing suits, ready to relax after the wedding. For Trysdale, however, there would be no relaxation.
As he slowly unbuttoned his gloves, the horrible recollection of the last few hours ran through his mind. He could still smell the wedding flowers. The love song for the bride and bridegroom still played in his head. Most of all, he remembered the minister's voice, declaring the marriage official in front of all the guests.
Even now, he tried to figure out why and how he had lost her. He also faced the new feeling of seeing his own miserable self clearly. The pride he had had looked like foolishness now. He had always had plenty of confidence, but now he was disgraced. His vanity and ego had been his armor, but now they were rags. With all these gone, the only thing that remained was his pitiful self.
When she was walking up the aisle toward the altar, he saw that she looked pale and somehow sad. Trysdale felt a meaningless dark pleasure from this. Perhaps it meant she still thought about him. Maybe she knew she was making a mistake. However, when he saw her happily looking up at the bridegroom with shining eyes, he knew she had forgotten him. Memories of the time when she used to look at him this way came flooding back. This was the final blow to his pride. Why had their romance ended this way? They hadn't fought with each other even once.
For the thousandth time, he replayed the last days of their relationship in his mind. He constantly tried to find the reason that everything had ended so suddenly.
She had always adored him and looked up to him. He had accepted her admiration like a king accepts reverence from his people. To him, her adoration had seemed so childlike, so faithful, and so worshipful. He had believed it was sincere. She had always seen the best in him. He had received her praise, like the desert absorbs the rain and doesn't promise fruit in return.
As Trysdale removed his second glove, the worst memory returned. It was the night when he asked her to spend the rest of their lives together. Now it was too painful to think of her beauty that night. It was her beauty that had always made him accept her praise. During their conversation she said, “Captain Carruthers says that you speak Spanish like a native speaker. Why haven't you ever told me? Is there anything you aren't good at?”
It occurred to Trysdale that he had repeated an old Spanish saying to Carruthers. He had heard it from somewhere by chance and then said it later, pretending to be smart. Carruthers, who loved to exaggerate, must have overestimated Trysdale's ability. However, her praise was so sweet that he could not tell her the truth. He just let her continue believing that he was a fluent speaker of Spanish.
How glad, how shy, how nervous she was when he proposed! How surprised she seemed when he kneeled in front of her! He could have sworn, and he could swear now, that the look in her eyes meant “yes.” However, she avoided a direct response and shyly said, “I will send you my answer tomorrow.” Trysdale, like a confident victor, happily allowed this short delay.
The next day he waited eagerly to hear from her. At noon, one of her servants came to Trysdale's door and left the strange cactus in the red earthen jar. There was no note, no message. There was merely a tag on the plant showing some foreign or botanical name. He waited until night, but her answer did not come. With his pride so deeply wounded, he did not try to visit her.
Two days later, they met by chance at a dinner. They greeted each other politely, but she looked at him breathlessly, waiting for some sign of what he was thinking. Trysdale just stared back at her gravely, wanting her explanation for not answering his proposal. Noticing a sudden mood change, she followed Trysdale's lead, turning cold and distant. Today, it is common knowledge that butterflies go through an egg-caterpillar-pupa cycle. However, until the 17th century, many people regarded the butterfly and the caterpillar as entirely different creatures. They believed insects were evil creatures that came from mud. Butterflies, on the other hand, were considered “summer birds,” and it was commonly believed that they just fell from the sky in warm weather and vanished in the fall.
In those days, one woman stood out as a pioneer. Although having an interest in insects was considered odd and weird, she observed many cases of insect metamorphosis and recorded these invaluable scientific observations through her unique paintings. Her name was Maria Sibylla Merian.
Merian was born in 1647 in the city of Frankfurt, Germany. When she was still little, she became very interested in painting flowers. It is said that she once climbed over a wealthy neighbor's wall to find flowers that she could paint. She took some tulips without the owner's permission. She must have been unaware of how expensive they were at the time. When little Maria confessed her act, the neighbor asked to see the painting. Seeing her painting, he was so impressed that he only asked for the painting as compensation.
When she was 13, Merian began to develop a keen interest in bugs. It was unusual for a young girl to be passionate about caterpillars, spiders, and other insects, but Merian was obsessed to the point that she would sometimes watch them for weeks on end. She carefully painted each step of their life cycles, depicting even subtle changes.
Even after Merian got married and had children, her passion for insects did not die down. She kept caterpillars and butterflies at home in order to study and paint them. To capture each moment of change, she spent many nights awake, watching and waiting. In her house were so many plants and jars of insects that her kitchen began to look more like a research lab.
After almost 20 years of hard work, Merian published a book about insects in 1679. There had already been books about insects, but Merian's was special. While no other books had ever depicted the full life cycle of insects, Merian's showed each stage of metamorphosis in detail. In addition, Merian revealed the relationships between living things by illustrating insects within their natural surroundings. This was different from other drawings of the time, which displayed only single specimens on a plain background. In an era when most scientists perceived plants and animals individually, Merian paid attention to how they fit together.
Many years passed and Merian moved to Amsterdam, where she was able to sell her paintings and view marvelous and exotic butterfly specimens that other enthusiasts had collected. However, seeing these lifeless creatures stuck in cases only made Merian desire to see them in their real habitat.
Finally, in June 1699, at 52 years of age, Merian and her youngest daughter got on a ship headed for Surinam, a territory belonging to the Netherlands in South America. This was a bold challenge. In addition to being a female naturalist in the male-dominated world of 17th-century science, Merian was also setting out on an expedition with purely scientific goals before it became common.
She spent about two years in Surinam, exploring the rainforests. Confronted with intense heat, fierce tropical storms, and dangerous animals such as tarantulas and flesh-eating fish, Merian continued to collect every sample she could get. In her own house, she kept the insects she brought out of the forests and made numerous descriptions and paintings. Eventually she painted more than 90 species of insects and at least 60 species of plants.
With these paintings she published her life's work, Metamorphosis of the Insects of Surinam, in 1705. The book showed Merian's passion for both insects and painting. It was a truly remarkable book for its time, which contained colorful and detailed paintings of butterflies, bees, spiders, frogs, and even snakes.
One illustration shows a bright blue butterfly flying over the colorful flowers of a pomegranate plant, with another butterfly sitting nearby and a caterpillar creeping down the flower stem. When the book was published, it had a tremendous influence on the scientific understanding of insects at the time. Some scientists even used her illustrations in the classification of species. Her work also brought new life not just to insect study but to the art world. Goethe, a celebrated German poet, also must have been impressed by her work. He praised Merian's talent for weaving art and science together.
In spite of this success, the popularity of her work faded after her death. It is thought that this was because she was not a professional researcher and had no formal education. Furthermore, her work dealt with flowers and insects, not the historical or religious topics that prevailed in those days.
In the 20th century, however, Maria Sibylla Merian's work was reevaluated. Historians and artists began to recognize her extraordinary accomplishments and her passion that contributed so much to early modern science. In recognition of her achievement, Germany put her portrait on their 500-mark bill, and today many schools there are named after her.

One of the best things that travel gives us is the memories of the places we've visited and the special experiences we had there. In order to hold on to these precious memories, we often bring home souvenirs. These souvenirs tend to be objects like postcards, fridge magnets, and key chains. However, a souvenir doesn't have to be something purchased in a gift shop. In fact, the word souvenir means "memory" in French, so whatever brings back memories could be called a "souvenir." Then what can we keep as souvenirs to preserve our travel memories other than ordinary gift shop products? Let's look into what other travelers do to make their travel memories last longer.
Make a Plate with Your Travel MapsMatthew (24, UK)
Buying souvenirs and taking photos can be good ways to remember a trip, but most of the time I would store these things somewhere and hardly ever look at them, and thus they would be slowly forgotten. So I came up with my own method of preserving memories in a more interesting and visible way.
I started doing this two years ago when I got an opportunity to travel around Europe with one of my best friends. It was a spontaneous trip, so we relied mainly on paper maps from hostels or tourist information offices. Every day, we planned our route and sightseeing stops on those maps. When I returned home, I realized I had accumulated lots of these maps, and suddenly I thought I could make a souvenir out of them.
I began by cutting out some landmarks from the map that showed the best parts of our trip, such as the Eiffel Tower, St. Peter's Basilica, and the Colosseum. Then I got an ordinary plate and pasted the map pieces onto it using special glue. Finally, I put a layer of sealant over the whole plate so that the paper wouldn't fade or wear out over time. The result is a wonderful decoration that I can look at every day. It is also a terrific reminder of every place I visited.

Shortly after my wedding 30 years ago, I went on a road trip with my husband. We started in New York City and drove across the entire country to San Francisco. There, at a tiny souvenir shop, my husband found a bracelet charm in the shape of the Golden Gate Bridge. When I saw this cute little charm, I thought it would be a great souvenir to remember the trip, so I bought it to hang on my silver bracelet. This turned out to be the beginning of a lifelong tradition.
After a few months, my husband and I got a chance to travel to Moscow. There, we happened to find a tiny St. Basil's Cathedral charm and it reminded me of the first charm from San Francisco. Without a moment's hesitation, we bought it to add to the bracelet. Since then, we have managed to find the perfect charm on every trip. We now have nearly 20 different charms―one from each trip. We have a Taj Mahal charm from India, a Parthenon charm from Greece, and even an elephant charm from Kenya. As my children grew up, they helped choose some of the charms, so our whole family can look back at every trip we've taken together.

Whether it's for uploading status messages and selfies on social networks or for looking up the best restaurants, staying connected online is not an option but a must for many travelers these days. However, finding an affordable way to get a reliable connection when traveling overseas can be very challenging. So I buy a SIM card when I get to a foreign country. At a reasonable price I can get the same connection speed as the locals. That's not all. Because countries all have different telecommunication companies, each SIM card is a unique souvenir of my trip to that country. What's more, as SIM cards don't take up luggage space, they're very easy to take home. I have a collection of nine already, and it's growing fast!
Another thing I collect might sound strange: Wi-Fi hotspots. Whenever I'm in a place I want to remember, I purposely connect to the Wi-Fi. Then, the hotspot name is automatically stored on my phone from that time on! Occasionally I glance through the list of all the museums, resorts, restaurants, and other places I've visited in my travels. Although I can't connect to these hotspots when I get home, just catching a glimpse of one of their names on the list makes me excited. All the memories from that place come flooding into my mind, and I can remember exactly what it was like to be, for example, at that peaceful terrace near the shore in Bali. For a moment, it's almost like I'm actually there!

For me, the best souvenirs are new friends I make while traveling. Obviously, I can't put the people in my suitcase to take them home, but while we're together, I can have conversations and laugh with them. Sometimes I add them on social media or ask for their contact information so that I can stay in touch with them.
Two years ago I made friends with an elderly couple from Japan I met at the Jeonju Hanok Village. While in the restroom, I happened upon a woman's bag. Right away, I took it to a nearby police station. When I got there, I met an elderly couple who had come there looking for their lost bag. Happily, the woman was the owner of the bag that I had found, so I handed it to them.
They were so thankful that they treated me to dinner, and we had a great time together. We still keep in touch, and last year they even visited my home in Gyeongju. For me, this proves that a good relationship is the best souvenir, because it can make the memories of a trip last for a long time.

Let's imagine that you decided to write an angry message to that friend. You say some harsh things that you normally wouldn't say. You're so angry that you don't care. When you're about to push "send," you think about whether it's a good idea. Before you know it, you've sent the message anyway. Teens are more likely to make these types of decisions than adults. With the help of our guest, we'll learn why teens tend to act before thinking everything through. Now, here's our guest for tonight, Dr. Jenny Clarkson! Thank you for joining us, doctor!
Dr. C: Thank you for having me, Joseph!
Host: Dr. Clarkson, could you first tell us about how we make decisions?
Dr. C: Sure. It seems like we make decisions almost immediately, but our brain actually has to go through several steps before deciding anything. Neurons, which are special brain cells, make up different structures in our brains. These structures send signals to each other. After the structures finish evaluating all the signals, they will send out a response that will tell our body what to do.
Host: I see. Does this process happen exactly the same way in everyone's brain?
Dr. C: People basically go through the same decision-making process,but there is a slight difference between teens and adults. Scientists used to think that the brain was done growing by the time you turned 12 since the brain reaches its maximum size around that age. However, studies show that some parts of the brain continue to develop until the early twenties. That means teens' brains are still maturing and not completely developed. This may be why teens seem to make risky decisions.
Host: Very interesting! Please tell us more about the relationship between their brains and their decision-making.
Dr. C: Well, the region that controls emotions matures faster than the part of the brain that helps you think ahead and measure risk. Teens therefore rely on it heavily, which means they are influenced more by feelings and instincts than by reason when making decisions. In other words, teens are usually not inclined to consider all the consequences of their actions, so they make choices that they end up regretting.
Host: So what you're saying is teens are likely to make choices based on their feelings since their brains are not fully developed.
Dr. C: That's right. However, this is not the whole story. Teens' brains are also going through other important changes. Their brains are constantly identifying and removing any weak connections between neurons. For example, if teens aren't reading, doing experiments, or solving problems, then the brain will get rid of the connections that are related to those activities. Once those are gone, their brains will put more energy into making other connections stronger.
Host: So, do you mean that the activities teens are involved in can shape the way their brains develop?
Dr. C: Exactly. This is why the types of activities teens choose to participate in are especially important. If a teen decides to play sports or learn an instrument, then the brain will strengthen those connections. On the other hand, if he or she chooses to surf the Internet or play online games all day long, then those connections will survive instead. The harder teens work at building good habits, the stronger those connections in their brains will be.
Host: I see. Do you have any final comments for our viewers?
Dr. C: If we view the adolescent period as merely a process of becoming mature, then it's easy to dismiss it as a passing phase. However, we shouldn't look at the changes that occur in teens' brains only in terms of maturity. Adolescence is also a period when significant changes happen in the brain that help new abilities appear. Therefore, adolescence is not a stage to simply get through, but an important stage in people's lives where they can develop many qualities and abilities, and shape their future.

Sometimes you may feel upset when you wake up suddenly from a nightmare, but you can always let out a sigh of relief. No matter how scary the dream was, at least you've woken up safe and sound in your own home. You can go back to sleep because you know your loved ones are just around the corner in their own beds. Your home is a special place that protects you and your family from everything.
Unfortunately, this is not a reality that everyone shares. Many people around the world don't wake up in a soft and comfortable bed. Instead, they open their eyes to see a dirt floor or a leaking roof. I didn't realize for a long time that something I take for granted could be someone else's biggest dream.
One day, I learned about a program that needed volunteers to go to different parts of the world to help build houses for the poor. After watching a presentation about it, I was really touched by the mission, so I decided to take part in the next volunteer trip. I had my doubts, though. I didn't know anything about construction, and we'd only be there for two weeks. Could we really change these people's lives as the presentation had suggested? I was going to find out soon enough.
The volunteers and I got to meet the family that would be moving into the home we were going to build the day after we arrived in Karjat, India. This family of five was living in a one-room hut. It was quite clear that this place was not big enough to house all the family members. In addition to that, there were jars everywhere to catch all the rainwater dripping from the roof. With all these jars on the floor, there was hardly any space to sit, let alone lie down. It was shocking to see how they were living. After meeting them, I felt even more determined to build them a beautiful home.
There were clear skies and temperatures over 30℃ that first week. Under the burning sun, we carried bricks, mixed concrete, and dug holes for pipes. We had to slowly take apart the family's hut to get more bricks and other materials for the new house. Every morning, the family and their neighbors would provide breakfast for everyone. Then, all of us—the volunteers, community members, and the family—would start working. We would share food and stories from time to time. When evening came, we were all very tired and sweaty, but we were happy.
After another week, the home was finally finished. On the last day, we had a party to celebrate the completion of the new house. It was the best way to end such an incredible experience. The entire community was there. Everyone was dancing or crying tears of joy. I will never forget the looks on the faces of the family as they waved goodbye to us.
As I look back on this trip, I find it amazing that so many different people came together to build a house for a family they'd never met. For many of us, it was the first time we'd ever built a house. The work was hard, but not one person ever stopped smiling or even complained. I'm thankful for the friendships I've made through this trip. In addition, I learned so much from the other volunteers, the community members, and this family. I thought I was there to give, but I received so much more in return. This experience has inspired me to continue building houses for others. I hope it will also encourage my friends and family members to help out in the future.
Although two weeks may not seem like a long time, I had the chance to make new friends, learn about a different culture, and, most importantly, do something that makes the lives of others better. I am so glad that this family now has a safe place where they can lay their heads. I believe everyone deserves a decent home. Right now, there are still many people around the world without a place to live. They are the reason why ordinary people like me want to go out there and help put a roof over their head.

Every day during lunch, Jamie enjoys a soft drink and has a decision to make: What should he do with the empty can? Many people would answer, "Recycle it!" Obviously, recycling is good for many reasons. We can reduce the amount of trash thrown away, use less energy than we would to make new products, and conserve natural resources by recycling. However, recycling is not a perfect way to manage waste. It still requires large amounts of energy to purify used resources and convert them into new products. So, what about trying to creatively reuse, or "upcycle," them instead? This new approach is becoming more popular since it is even more environmentally friendly than recycling. What's more, it can also be fun! Here are some inspiring examples of how people have creatively upcycled old, used things.
Through upcycling, a seemingly useless object can be transformed into something completely different that is useful for everyday life. What do you think can be done with old truck tarps, car seat belts, and bicycle inner tubes? Individually, these things look like trash, but with a little imagination the Freitag brothers, Markus and Daniel, repurpose them for something totally new: very strong bags. These bags are perfect for bicyclists going to work every day in all kinds of weather. Similarly, a man named Kyle Parsons and his partners have been creatively reusing old motorcycle tires from Bali, Indonesia. A shocking number of tires get thrown away there every year, and they are a serious environmental problem since they cannot decompose or be recycled. To solve this problem, Parsons and his team are turning them into sandal bottoms. They then use canvas and natural materials to make the other sandal parts. What a great reuse of resources!

Along with small everyday items, much bigger things can also be upcycled—even old buildings that cannot be used for their original purpose anymore. The German government showed us an excellent example of this with a former steel plant that closed in 1985. Rather than destroy the plant's buildings or abandon the entire facility, they decided to give it new meaning as a series of useful public structures. Many of the buildings kept their original shapes, but received extra equipment and new designs in their surrounding areas. For instance, old gas tanks became pools for divers. Concrete walls of iron storage towers were turned into ideal training fields for rock climbers. Can you believe a building for melting metal is now a viewing platform with a gorgeous 360-degree view? The final result is the Landscape Park Duisburg Nord. It has almost 570 acres of land filled with gardens, cycling paths, and pretty lights at night, in addition to its creatively repurposed buildings. This park proves that it's possible to preserve the heritage of a place as well as the environment.
When artists add their own creative touches, things that most people consider junk are reborn as beautiful works of art. The giant pictures made from trash by environmental artist Tom Deininger are one of a kind. Up close, these brightly colored creations look like a mixed-up mess of broken plastic, unwanted toys, and bent wire—all things that cannot be recycled. From farther away, however, they appear to blend together into marvelous landscapes or other paintings. There is also an artist who shows that even disposable cups can be reused as artistic material. For years, Gwyneth Leech has turned used coffee cups into brilliant art exhibits. After a cup is used by someone, she paints a unique design on it and hangs it with many other painted cups in front of a window or pretty background. These works from Leech and Deininger are not only pleasing to the eye, but they also naturally provoke an interest in environmental conservation in people.
As you can see, creative thinking has the power to make many positive changes to the environment. By giving old products more value, we can lessen the amount of waste in a way that is even more eco-friendly than recycling. So what would you say to Jamie now as he decides what to do with his cans? Perhaps he could upcycle them to make lanterns, toys, or sculptures for his friends and family. The options are endless, and all he needs is a little creativity to think of them. In the same way, stop and think before you throw something out. Who knows? Maybe you can turn that trash into treasure.
